Brief History of Insurance Department

The Department of Insurance was created in the year 1997 out of Financial Studies and Mr. G. Olotu was appointed the pioneer Head of department in the same year. The Financial Study department was broken into three major departments, explicitly, Accountancy, Banking and Finance and Insurance departments respectively. The department started with three core academic members of Staff and two Corp Members as follows:

From inception, the department started both National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes. The department was accredited by National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN) in the year 1997 and 2003 respectively and reaccreditation exercise at regular interval of five years by both bodies. The NBTE conducted resource inspection in 1997 and full accreditation of the department in 1998.

Achievements of the Department

The department of Insurance has record of the following achievements:

• Information and Communication Technology (ICT): Insurance department can boast of a state of the heart ICT centre, financed by the National Insurance Commission(NAICOM)
• Departmental Library: The department has its own library well furnished and stocked with textbooks on Insurance courses and other related courses.
• Annual Orientation Programme: The department organizes orientation programme for her new students (both ND and HND) annually, to the get them acquainted with the system.
• Donation from the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN): The department of Insurance received the following items from CIIN:
• 8 all in one brand new HP computers
• 165 Copies of Insurance Course books
• Furniture to the departmental library

• Seminar / Workshop: The department in its magnanimity has organized two seminars, titled:
• Capacity Building on Insurance Curriculum for Secondary School teachers
• Risk management and safety of Okada riders in Offa Local Government

 

Approved entry requirement for admission into Insurance Department

Prospective applicant seeking admission in the department must have minimum of five “O” level credits to include English Language, Mathematics, Economics or Commerce and any other two from the following subjects:

1. Insurance
2. Financial Accounting / Book keeping
3. Biology / Agricultural Science
4. Geography
5. Government / Civic Education
6. Office practice
7. Marketing
8. Business Method
9. Economics
10. Commerce

The results of the following examination bodies are acceptable

• WAEC
• NECO
