DIRECTORATE OF RESEARCH AND INNOVATIONS

1.0       BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DIRECTORATE

The Directorate was established in January 2017 with two members of staff namely, the Pioneer Dean Dr. A.S. Mohammed and Deputy Registrar, Mr. R.B. Amoko. There was no official office allocation for the new Directorate due to the not so clear nature of operations. On the 25th January, 2021 the Unit welcomed the new Dean Dr. (Mrs.) KORTER Grace Oluwatoyin.  As a result of the solid foundation laid by the pioneer staff, quite a number of proposed programs have successfully been executed for both Academic and Administrative staff of the Polytechnic.

1.1       Staff of the Directorate

The Dean, a Deputy Registrar, an Administrative Officer II, a Higher Executive Officer and an Adhoc Staff constitute the Directorate. The staff list with other details is contained as appendix in this report.

The activities of the Directorate of Research and Innovation is presented in three (3) sections for the 2017-2021 period namely, a brief on the role of the Directorate, activities of the Directorate and action plan of the Directorate.

 

1.2       A brief on the role of the Directorate

  1. Develop portfolios of research that are of international, national and regional relevance
  2. Identify the strengths and/or create strengths which the Polytechnic can make a priority
  3. Maintain cohesive plans to foster excellence, support individual project and programmatic research
  4. Provide funding opportunities for Faculty members and Outstanding students
  5. Provide technical support for Faculty members and Outstanding students
  6. Develop and maintain a research database for Faculty members and Outstanding students

 

1.3       Activities of the Directorate

The management, staff and students have been actively engaged in the following programmes

  • Federal Scholarships
  1. Indian Council For Cultural Relations
  2. Chief Lecturer’s Lecture Series
  3. In-House Training/Workshop in Collaboration with the Registrar’s Office
  • Grant Winning Writing Workshops

Through these academic activities, the Management have created an enabling environment for all staff and students to develop their competence and compete favorably with their counterparts both at home and abroad. For instance, lecturers are able to show case their research prowess, non- academic staff are able to improve on their administrative ethics and students are enhanced for better research output.

The following are examples of involvement of the management, staff and students towards achieving academic excellence. On the 1st April, 2021 the Rector, HOD languages and Staff advisers interacted with students to expose them to winning skills on Essay writing. The following are areas of focus

The Polytechnic management ensures funding opportunities for Faculty members and Outstanding students are communicated immediately the calls arrive.

2.0       BRIEF HISTORY OF DEPARTMENT

The Unit was established in January 2017 with two members of staff- the Pioneer Deputy Registrar, Mr. R.B. Amoko and the Pioneer Dean Dr. A.S Mohammed. There was no official office allocation for the new Unit then, due to not so clear nature of operations as usual with a new Unit, the previous activities of the Polytechnic Board of Research Committee were handed to the Unit without a hand over note.

However, as at now, the Unit has cause to be proud of its achievements and humbled with its limitation.

Committees were set up for smooth operations of the Unit. These are;

  • Financial Committee made up of the Dean, the Deputy Registrar and a member of the research committee.
  • Research-Lab Committee which is more or less an Ad-hoc committee to ensure the development of an efficient research lab
  • Institution –Based Research Committee this was reconstituted and comprised the Dean as the chairman, a representative each from each of the six schools and the Library while the deputy registrar of the Unit serves as the secretary.
  • Fabrication Committee the Unit requested for and was able to transfer fabrication activities from the physical planning department it was earlier domiciled in, since fabrication is purely for school of engineering, the committee comprised of the Dean as the chairman, a representative of the Dean of Engineering and each of the departments in the school of engineering as members while the deputy registrar in the unit served as the secretary.

On 25th January, 2021 the Unit welcome the new Dean in person of Dr. (Mrs.) KORTER Grace Oluwatoyin, since her assumption to office quite a number of proposed Programme have successfully been executed and some new programs and workshop for both Academics and Administrative staff like;

Chief Lecturers’ Lecture Series Inaugural Lectures was approved by the Academic Board, so far we have had Four 4 Series of the Lectures by the Rector Dr. Olatunji Lateef A, Deputy Rector Dr. Afolabi Olarongbe A, Dr. Kadiri Kamoru O and Dr.Azeez Ajao

Administrative Ethics Workshop the Unit has had (2) two series by the Registrar Mr. Adetunji Oni and Deputy Registrar Junior Staff Estab Mr. Oyesola Olusegun.

Proposals Grant Wining Workshop this program is for sanitizing the polytechnic staff on how to write and win Grants both National and International. The workshop is for all the schools in the polytechnic, we have done for School of Pure and Applied Science.

On-Going Research and Proposal Presentation this seminar/workshop was created mainly for the purpose of Presenting Research papers both Ongoing and Completed research work for critiques and learning.

 

2.1       TERMS OF REFERENCE

(1)       Promote the role of the Polytechnic as a primary source of applied research;

(2)       Utilize the skills of the Polytechnic to undertake all forms of research that contribute to the advancement of knowledge, cultural and social development, preservation of the environment and economic growth;

(3)       Develop portfolios of research that are of regional, national and international relevance and build on the strengths of the Polytechnic and/or create strengths which the Polytechnic has identified as a priority;

(4)        Maintain cohesive plans, research database and effective management policies and practices that foster excellence, support individual, project and   programmatic research,

(5)      Work to increase external funding and support for research and creative work by liaising with relevant agencies, individuals and group.

(6)      Protect, develop and exploit the intellectual property developed in the Polytechnic.

(7)      Promote research based teaching and enhance scholarship through clearly linking research, professional practice, creative work and teaching;

(8)       Place a high priority on excellence and innovation in creative work, research, research training and the dissemination of research in the professional development, recognition and rewards systems of the Polytechnic;

(9)       Recruit increased numbers of students and provide them with research supervision, infrastructure and support of the highest possible quality;

(10)     Develop and maintain an infrastructure that can sustain and promote high quality research and that maximises interfaculty co-operation and synergies;

(11)     Promote research alliances and collaborative partnerships with other tertiary institutions, research institutions, public agencies and the private sector.

(12)      To create relevant research units for schools and departments as needs and opportunities arise.

 (13)     Ensure the transformation of concepts and designs into reality through drafting, fabrication and manufacturing.

 (14)     Plan for and secure endowment for the purpose of development of other sources of funding for short-term and long-term research needs of the Polytechnic.

(15)      Advise on the investment and utilization of endowment for staff, students and facilities for the development of the Polytechnic.

 

(16)      Work out modalities for deployment of endowments for cutting-edge research, development and innovation activities as well as providing essential support for faculty and students.

 

(17)      Set out modalities for using endowment to keep pace with expansion in knowledge and building strength in emerging research fields.

 

(18)      Shall be a member of Management Committee

 

(19)      Shall be a member of relevant committees of the Governing Council and the Management

 

(20)      Shall discharge any other duties that might from time-to-time be assigned by the Rector.

3.0     REPORT ON THE MEETING BETWEEN SHAANXI POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE AND THE FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC OFFA

The meeting took place at the Board Room of the African College of Agriculture, Technical and Vocational Studies (ACAVATS) Akure, on the 8th April, 2021 between 10.29am and 11.30am.

In attendance was the Representative of Shaanxi Polytechnic Institute, China: Dr AYODELE Julius Rector of (ACAVATS) and proprietor of 1st Mark Innovation Polytechnic Ado Ekiti: Professor OLATUNJI Timothy Sunday, Dr. KORTER Grace and Mrs SHITTU Faizah.

 

  1. Area of cooperation

The Area of cooperation are on sixty six (66) programmes with emphasis on ICT, Engineering and the sciences. For any area our institution will be interested for collaboration we will need to domesticate the syllabus to NBTE template.

 

The domesticated syllabus will be forwarded NBTE first for preliminary review. Subsequently the syllabus will be subjected to National critique.

 

Action Required: The Polytechnic is to select four (4) programs which could be existing or newly developed courses.

 

  1. Award of Certificate

For the courses selected by the institution, our students will obtains two (2) certificates. One (1) at the end of the National Diploma and the other at the end of the internship at SHAANXI POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE, China. This is to take place during the one (1) year internship usually at the end of the ND program.

Our best graduating students will have transportation, accommodation and feeding for free. Others will have to pay for transportation.

Also students can progress for degree programs.

Employment of our students in this program will be the responsibility of SHAANXI POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE, China.

  • China Language Centre

The Polytechnic has been given the offer to have a China Language Centre.

4.0       REPORT ON ESSAY ENTRIES FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE 2021 AND 8TH ARSOCONTINENTAL ESSAY COMPETITION ON STATNDARDIZATION

VENUE: 450 capacity hall of the Federal Polytechnic Offa.

The annual ARSOCONTINENTAL ESSAY COMPETITION ON STATNDARDIZATION is organized by the African Organization for Standardization (ARSO) for African students below the age of 35 years.

The award categories are:

National level: 1st – N100,000.00; 2nd -N70,000.00 and 3rd –N50,000.00

Continental level: 1st – USD1000.00; 2nd -USD800.00 and 3rd –USD500.00 with an all-expense paid trip to the host country of the next ARSO General Assembly Meeting.

The Poster, concept paper and registration form are to be submitted for conveyance to the students for necessary information at www.son.gov.ng/www.arso-oran.org

The closing date is mid night on Saturday 8th May, 2021.
