Student Affairs Directorate

DIRECTORATE OF STUDENTS’ AFFAIRS

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

With the establishment of the Federal Polytechnic Offa in 1992, the unit came into existence to handle all issues relating to students; ranging from welfare, complaints, counselling, and accommodation. It regulates and coordinates all the activities of students on campus and outside the campus. The unit oversees all the students union to schools and Departmental Associations, Indigenous Associations, Clubs and Societies. It serves as the intermediary between the Management and the students. It was then known as Students’ Affairs. The pioneer head was a Registry staff by name Chief A. B. Olaoye (Principal Assistant Registrar) from the year 1993 to the year 2000. He was the students’ Affairs Officer.

The unit became a Directorate in the year 2000 and since then it has been headed by academic staff precisely a Chief Lecturer who acts as the Dean with a Deputy Registrar to assist on day to day running of the office. The first Dean of the Directorate was Late Dr. A. D. Okonta and the Deputy Registrar was Mr. J. A. Balogun. Various Deans have served in the Directorate since then as indicated below:

CODE OF CONDUCT

Discipline remains a major focal point of the Management of the Polytechnic. Even the certificates awarded to the graduates of the polytechnic emphasize the place of discipline and knowledge.

The following measures, among many others, are put in place to ensure discipline among the students.

  1. STUDENTS’ INFORMATION HANDBOOK: This handbook spells out all the dos and don’ts by the students with specific sanctions recommended for every violation. This handbook is given to every student upon resumption to the institution. When it was observed that students hardly read nor take the handbook seriously, a committee was set up to look into the possibility of Lecturers in both the Departments of Humanities and social sciences as well as Languages to teach the content of the handbook to students with course code given to it but scores obtained will be non-gradable since it has not been approved by the NBTE. This has been approved by the Academic Board with implementation to commence in the 2021/2022 Academic session.
  2. STUDENTS’ DRESS CODE: The Polytechnic has a dress code for all categories of students on campus. In the dress code, clear description of dresses not approved for students on the two campuses are listed. The dress code contains the type of hairstyles not approved for both boys and girls including the type of jewelleries approved for use. To monitor total adherence, the polytechnic security personnel, assisted by the staff from the SERVICOM Unit manned various entrances to the campuses and all violators are usually made to remove all unapproved apparel, where possible, or sent back home to dress properly. Measures are equally put in place to monitor violators that may possibly escape the scrutiny of the security at the entrances.
  3. STUDENTS DISCIPLINARY COMMITTEE: This committee has been in place since the inception of the Institution. It is headed by the Deputy Rector (Admin) with the under listed members:
    1. Dean, Students’ Affairs
    2. Legal Unit (Rep)
    3. ASUP, SSANIP & NASU (Reps)
    4. SERVICOM Unit (Rep)
    5. The CSO
    6. SUG (Rep)

The committee is saddled with the responsibility of treating all cases of indiscipline by the students. This committee has assisted in no small way to ensure discipline and the fear of the committee is the beginning of wisdom for most students.
