Computer Science Department

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Computer Science Department was established in October 1992 with intake of 120 National Diploma (ND) students. The Higher National Diploma (HND) programme took off in 1995 with an intake of 60 students. The staff and student population has grown steadily ever since. The staff strength currently stands at36 comprising of 26 full time lecturers, 3 instructors, 4 technologist, 1 Senior Technician and 2 admin staff. Two of the staff are Ph.D. holders, 6 are currently on their Ph.D.programmes in universities in the country and abroad, while 9 are Master degree holders. Seventy-Five percent (75%) of the academic staff of the Department are full members of Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) and Computer Professional Registration Council of Nigeria (CPN).

There are other lecturers servicing the department from the Department of Mathematics/Statistics, Computer Engineering, Humanities and General Studies. Both ND and HND programmes of the Department is accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). The Department is among the departments in the School of Applied Sciences and Technology selected to run B.Sc. degree programme in Computer Science as an affiliate of Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State.

FACILITIES AVAILABLE IN THE DEPARTMENT

The department has 3 laboratories:

  1. LAB 1 for ND Students;
  2. Hardware Maintenance LAB;
  • LAB 3 for HND Students

The three (3) laboratories are equipped with current hardware and software for students’ practical classes. Efforts are being made by the management to purchase additional computer systems for the lab 1 and lab 2 to complement the existing ones

ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE DEPARTMENT

The achievements of Department in the last two years are segmented under the following headings:

  1. Departmental Administration

The Department has been able to improve the situations of staff offices by opening more offices within the department area through repair and rehabilitation of the offices in order to make staffs of department who are far away from the department closer for easier coordination and administration. Offices were also created for the department three Chief Technologist with the doors of the three laboratories replaced with modern ones. This was achieved with the departmental fees, sales of practical manuals and financial supports by the management of the Polytechnic. These efforts assisted the department during the NUC resource inspection visit to the department in July 2018.

  1. Academic Matters

In 2017/18 academic session, the Department was among the four departments selected to run B.Tech. degree programme in Computer Science as an affiliate of Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State by the National Universities Commission (NUC) for 2018/19 academic session.

The Department has continued to improve the quality of HND and ND projects to meet standards and production of implementable software from our student’s projects, most specially the HND projects. For 2017/18 academic session more than eight (8) HND projects were considered the best and implementable within the Polytechnic with the support from Management just like the implementation of E-Voting System used for 2017/18 Student Union (SUG) elections that was developed by students of the department as projects.

  1. Laboratory Practical

The Department has improved the way and manner practical’s are conducted for the students. The followings are what was done in the laboratories to improve the conduct of practicals:

  1. The tiling of the Lab 2 (HND) formally used by Mathematics and Statistics department. The electrification of this lab was also carried out and departmental student association (NACOSS) helped install two (2) split unit Air conditioner (2HP).
  2. Purchase and the installation of the departmental Server with the following configurations: 4 processors with 3,8 gigaHertz speed, 8 gigabyte RAM size and 1 Tbyte Hard Disk size for student practicals especially HND practicals since all have Laptops for practicals.
  • Purchase of Software for practicals and two Routers for sharing resources (Softwares) installed on the Server.
  1. The paintings of internal walls of Laboratories including the Technologists offices for NUC resource inspection and NBTE accreditation by the management.
  2. Purchase of 1 no HP (wifi) Printer for the laboratories.
