DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY
BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Science Technology, formerly Science Laboratory Technology (initially referred to as Applied Sciences) was established in 1992 with twelve (12) academic staff during the 1992/93 session. Twenty-one (21) students were admitted into the National Diploma programme in Science Laboratory Technology. In 1994/95 session, the National Diploma programme was given initial accreditation by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). In 1995/96 session, resource approval was granted by the NBTE to mount Higher National Diploma in Physics with Electronics and Biology/Microbiology options. During the 1997/98 session the student population rose to 466, the staff strength increased to 31 and programmes approved by NBTE at HND level includes Biology/Microbiology, Chemistry/Biochemistry and Physics with Electronics. Now the students population has rose tremendously to about 1,000 in 2004/2005 session.
In year 2019, NBTE has increased the programmes offered at HND level to seven (7), viz:
Higher National Diploma
- Biochemistry Option
- Chemistry Option
- Environmental Biology Option
- Microbiology Option
- Biology/Microbiology Option
- Chemistry/Biochemistry Option
- Physics with Electronics Option
The Head of Department administers the department and is assisted by Heads of unit or unit coordinators. There are coordinators for Biology/Microbiology: Chemistry/Biochemistry, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Microbiology, Environmental Biology and Physics with Electronics as shown in the organogram below.

FACILITIES:
A well-equipped Laboratorieswith modern facilities, a functioning Glass Workshop, a standard Biological Garden and numerous Classrooms.
PROGRAMME GOAL:
This programme is designed to produce laboratory technologists capable of applying laboratory techniques to complement the work of scientists in industrial and laboratory biochemical analysis and production processes.
PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES:
A diplomate of this programme should be able to: Carry out analysis andfunction effectively in laboratories in education, food and chemical industries and in research institutes.
CURRICULUM STRUCTURE
ND Programme
The structure of the ND Programme consists of four semesters of classroom, laboratory and workshop activities in the college–and a semester (3-4 months) of supervised industrial work experience scheme (SIWES). Each Semester shall be of 17 weeks duration made up as follows: 15 contact weeks of teaching, i.e. recitation, practical exercises, quizzes, test e.t.c; and a 2 weeks SIWES shall take place at the end of the second semester of the first year.
HND Programme
The Higher National Diploma programmes are terminal programmesstructured to last for two years (four semesters).
ACCREDITATION: Each programme offered either at the ND or HND level shall be accredited by NBTE before the diplomates can be awarded either of the two diploma certificate. Details about the process of accreditation ofprogrammes for the award of the ND or HND are available with the Executive Secretary, Programmes Division, National Board for Technical Education, Plot B, Bida Road, P.M.B. 2239, Kaduna, Nigeria.
CONDITIONS FOR THE AWARD OF THE ND/HND
Institutions offering accredited programmes will award the National Diploma/Higher National Diploma to candidates who successfully completed the programme after passing prescribed coursework, examinations, diploma project and the supervised industrial work experience. Such candidates should have completed a minimum of between 72 and 80 semester credit units depending on the programme. Diplomates shall be classified as follows:
Distinction - GPA of 3.50 and above
Upper Credit -GPA of 3.00 - 3.49
Lower Credit -GPA of 2.50 – 2.49
Pass - GPA of 2.00 – 2.49
Fail - GPA of below 2.0
