DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES
HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
In 1992 when the Federal Polytechnic Offa was established with four Departments including the Department of General Studies, as it was then called, the Department of Social Studies was hardly known. Courses were offered in the Department of General Studies only as supporting courses to all other Departments.
At the period when the school of General Studies still bore the name Department of General Studies, in 1993 the pioneering Head of Department was Mr. Aje, with the following staff as pioneering Lecturers;
- Fabule 1992 English major
- F. F. Olatunji 1992 English “
- A. K. Olaosebikan 1992 English “
- O. A. Afolabi 1992 English “
- W. A. Salako 1992 Psychology “
- B. G. Ibrahim 1992 Sociology “
- A. A. Saka 1992 Economics “
- G. T. Ijaiya 1992 Economics “
- Miss M. M. Adeniyi (Adeyinka)1992 English “
- Miss A. Babaranti 1992 Political Science “
The School of General Studies was established in the year 1995 comprising of the Department of Liberal Studies, English and Communication Department, and the Department of Mass Communication. This change in name and expansion of Department of General Studies to the School of General Studies, also saw some pioneering members of the Department of General Studies redeployed to other Departments. In essence, those with first degrees in Maths. to Maths. & Statistic Department. While those with Physics, Chemistry and Biology were deployed to Department of Science Laboratory Technology. And those with Economics to Department of Business and Financial studies as it were then known.
Since 1996 that Department of Liberal Studies (later to be known as Department of Social Sciences and Humanities) was fully established, it started briefly under the leadership of late Mr. W. A. Salako and later, Mr. G. A. Afolayan. Some lecturers have had the opportunity of being Heads of Department at various occasions.
The Department has grown from its pioneering stage when it was faced with lack of facilities, including the problem of accommodation, but this will soon be over when the Department eventually moves to permanent building of the School of General Studies.
During the 2003/2004 accreditation exercise of the School by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), it was resolved that Department of Liberal Studies should be given a higher status, which is Department of Social Sciences and Humanities to reflect a department that cut across teaching of Social Sciences and Humanities courses [SS & H]. The Department was also commended by the NBTE team for the high-level man-power observed as every lecturer has at least a master degree with some having two Master degrees and their level of commitment to academic excellence.
During the same 2003/2004 accreditation exercise, it was recommended that all law courses being serviced by the Department of Business Administration be transferred to Department of Social Sciences and Humanities, since that time law lecturers transferred to SS &H Department have been doing excellent jobs. Although, some department are still teaching law courses and this is contrary to NBTE recommendation.
As at 2017, there are thirty lecturers in the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities. Right from the time the Department was established, its aims and objectives in line with the directives and syllabus of the National Board for Technical Education, has not changed much. The Department of Social Sciences and Humanities in line with the Federal Polytechnic Offa objectives, aims at producing Polytechnic graduates who will make significant contributions to the development of their nation. Therefore, the courses are designed to combine theory with practice in understanding and providing solutions to the nation’s economic, socio-political and technological problems among others.
LANDMARK ACHIEVEMENTS
Department of Social Sciences and Humanities in conjunction with other departments in the School successfully organized the First National Conference of the School of General Studies (SGS) in March 2003 with the theme “Managing Nigerian Polity for Development in a Democratic Dispensation. Likewise, the Department did during the SGS Second and Third National Conferences held in October 2015 and July 2017 respectively.
The students’ demonstration of 8th May, 2000 prompted the Department to carry out a research on modalities for achieving peaceful co-existence between the polytechnic community and the host community. The department drew and administered questionnaires on a population comprising of polytechnic management, indigenes of Offa Township, the neighboring communities, landlords, lecturers, the Student Union Government (SUG) and all students.
The research work eventually led to the organization of a workshop (gown/town) to sensitize the host community (Offa), the environ and the polytechnic community on the need for peaceful co-existence. The workshop brought together under one roof, the Olofa of Offa, the Elerin of Erin-ile, prominent chiefs, the D.P.O., students communities, vigilante groups, Landlords, Fire Brigade Staff, FRSC, Parents and other prominent people in and around Offa community to express their grievances and offer solutions. The success of this workshop greatly helped in achieving the present peaceful co-existence being enjoyed by the polytechnic and the host community till date.
The department being multi-dimensional in nature, contributed effectively to the review of the new curriculum organized by the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) by analyzing the advantages and challenges of the new syllabi.

Furthermore, the Department was involved in the environmental acceptance of the host communities regarding the movement of the polytechnic from temporary site to the permanent site.

Our parents departments confirmed that Citizenship Education courses have greatly influenced the behavior of students and ways of channeling their grievances.
