BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department was established in 2010/2011 academic year with the appointment of a pioneer Head, in person of Tpl/Arc A.E Adama who was redeployed from the Department of Architectural Technology. Through the concerted efforts of the pioneer Head of Department and other members of staff, the visitation of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) in 2011 found the Department worthy of being accorded full accreditation.
The vision of the Department is to maintain high integrity and identity in offering systematic and scientific education in the core areas of Urban and Regional Planning which include: Housing; Transportation Planning; Environmental Health; Rural and Community Development Planning; Urban Design; Regional Development Planning; Facility Planning; Landscape Planning; Environmental Impact Assessment; Geographic Information System (GIS) and AUTOCAD among others. The Department parades high quality academic staff, spread across these various sub-disciplines of Urban and Regional Planning. The Department possesses a good number of facilities that enhances the training of students. These include drawing studios, modeling workshops, and library as well as computer laboratory.
The Department is currently running National diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) Programme. However, with the recent resource inspection of HND the department has kick-start the HND programme in 2021/2022 academic session. It is hoped that with the present HND programme on-going, the Department will continue to occupy its place of pride in the committee of responsible planning schools in Nigeria and the world at large.
FACILITIES AVAILABLE IN THE DEPARTMENT
The Department currently occupies a block of building, comprising the departmental office, examination office, a library, two modeling workshops, two computer laboratories, and two staff offices (occupied by lecturers). There is also a small building occupied by the department, housing two studios and four staff offices.
PROGRAMMES AVAILABLE AND DURATION
The programme available in the Department currently is the National Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning. The ND programme consists of four semesters of classroom, laboratory and workshop activities in the polytechnic. Each semester should be of seventeen weeks duration made up of the following; 15 contact weeks of teaching, that is, lecture, recitation and practical exercises, and 2 weeks for test, examinations and registration.
