BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS
The Department of Statistics is a unit in the School of Applied Sciences and Technology.
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics now Department of Statistics was initially part of General Studies Department at the inception of the Polytechnic in 1992. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics was created in 1994 when the National Diploma Programme in Statistics was mounted.
The Department is made up of two units:
- Mathematics Unit
- Statistics Unit
The ND Statistics programme was mounted in 1995/96 academic session and accreditation was granted by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) in 1996.
The NBTE Curriculum of the ND programme consists of four components. These are General Studies; Foundation courses; Professional courses andSIWES. The National Diploma programme in Statistics is aimed at producing assistant statisticians capable of collecting data, analyzing and making inference under supervision. On completion of this programme, the diplomate should be able to understand the applications of statistics in commercial, industrial and scientific environment with the use of computers for various purposes.
The NBTE Curriculum of the HND programme consists of three components. These are General Studies, Foundation courses and Professional courses. The Higher National Diploma in Statistics is aimed at producing professional statisticians. On completion of this programme, the diplomate should have deep understanding of statistics and its application within the commercial, industrial and scientific environment and the ability to use a computer when the need arises.
It is in this light that the name of the department was changed from Department of Mathematics and Statistics to Department of Statistics in 2019.
