The Federal Polytechnic, Offa was established during the regime of General I.B. Babangida as the then Head of state of our dear Country, Nigeria. The Federal Polytechnic Offa took off with the establishment of six academic departments. This great department that was firstly named Secretarial Studies Department was one of these first six departments that were established. It was established during the headship of the pioneer Rector Engr. Dr. Lady T.O. Adeife  Osemeikhian. The department took off with forty six (46) students through the normal admission procedure as processed by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB). The courses offered by the department were as contained in the Secretarial Studies National Guide Syllabus. The department started with a name that goes with its National Diploma Programme Secretarial Studies; hence, it’s being called Department of Secretarial Studies.

When the Higher National Diploma (HND) programme was introduced during the 1995/1996 academic session; the department maintained its name but with two programmes Ordinary National Diploma (as it was called then OND) in Secretarial Studies and Higher National Diploma in Secretarial Administration. The Higher National Diploma Programme commenced with nineteen (19) students.
