The School of General Studies metamorphosed from the Department of General Studies in 1994. Before then, there were two departments English and Communication and Department of Liberal Studies.
The first Director for the School in 1995 was Mr. S.A Aje from the Department of English and Communication. In 1999 after the tenure of the second Director, Mr. J.A Fabule, the then Mrs. F.F. Olatunji (now Dr. Mrs. F. Olatunji) assumed the role of the Director. It was during her tenure in 1999 that the school midwife the establishment of the Department of Mass Communication of the Polytechnic. Then, Rev. S.A Adeyemo from the Department of English and Communication was deployed to pioneer the takeoff of the department. Through this, the Department of Mass Communication domicile in the School of General Studies until later when the School of Communication and Information Technology was established and the Department of Mass Communication was removed from the School of General Studies to join the new School.
However, the two departments had their names changed to Department of Languages and Department of Social Sciences and Humanities in the year 2004.
The two departments in the School service all the departments in the institution. The School is thus very important to all the students.
