DEPARTMENT OF MASS COMMUNICATION

Brief History of the Department of Mass Communication

The Department was established in 1999 by the pioneer Rector of the Polytechnic, Engr. Dr. (Mrs.) Taiwo Adeife Osemehikan while Reverend S.A Adeyemo was appointed as the Acting Head of the Department. The Department admitted the first set of the National Diploma students to its Full Time programme in year 2000 while Part Time programme commenced a year after. Some of the Pioneer Teaching staff members were; Reverend S.A Adeyemo, Dr. J.B Ige, Mr. Oyewole, Dr. Rasaq M. Adisa, Dr. A.O Laaro, Dr. D.B Oloyede, Mr. K.D Bamidele, Mrs. Ogungbamigbe, Mr.Alawode, Dr. Asakpa S.O. Others who joined the department later were, Mr. Bankole T.O, Mr. Olatilo, and Prince Engr. Adekanye Mojeed.

Dr. J.B Ige later became the substantive Head of the Department. The Department of Mass Communication no doubt, has metamorphosed into a vibrant Department in the School of Communication and Information Technology with qualified and experienced academic staff.

Mr. Oyewole A.A succeeded Dr. Ige J.B and the duos have contributed immensely to the growth and development of the Department, especially in the areas of Accreditation of both National Diploma and Higher National Diploma programmes of the Department, Staff Development and Training.

Dr. David Binta Oloyede, was the third substantive head of the Department. He supervised the movement of the Department to the new Department office complex at the main campus of the polytechnic while the Part Time programmes still run at the other campus of the school.

The incumbent Head of Department, Wole Alawode, a seasoned Public Relations personality took the leadership of the Department in the late 2019. He has been able to reposition the Department to be able to stand the challenges of teaching and learning of Mass Communication in this era of media plurality and dynamism. Under his watch the Department has made a move to collaborate with relevant organizations and refocused the Department on practical productions including Research and Development TV, an online video channel world class sensitization campaigns.

At present, management of the Polytechnic has concluded plans to mount training radio station for teaming students in the Department to equip them for practice in the field. The Department now has Radio and Television studios, Public Relations and Adverts studio, News room, Photography Studio and Laboratory and Printing Press.

The management has further assisted the Department by appointing more academic staff members and procurement of studios and laboratories equipment and facilities. There are 18 lecturers, 2 Instructor and four Technologists who teach courses in the fields of Journalism, Public Relations, Advertising, Broadcasting, Publishing, Marketing, New Media (ICTs) among other adjuncts of Mass Communication.
